Getting Around Sumbawa Island: What You Should Know Before You Arrive
14 August 2026 · 7 min read
Sumbawa is far bigger than most people expect. Misjudging the distances can throw off your entire travel plan.

The Most Common Mistake First-Time Visitors Make
On a map, Sumbawa looks like a medium-sized island. In reality, it's long and winding, with roads that follow the contours of the coastline and hills.
A concrete example: from Sumbawa Besar Airport to Labuan Jambu Village — the departure point for the whale shark trip — takes around three hours by road. From Poto Tano Harbour at the western tip to Labuan Jambu, it's about five hours. These aren't distances you can afford to underestimate when planning an itinerary.
Many travellers plan on the assumption that every destination is one or two hours away. The result: their days end up spent on the road, and time at each destination gets rushed.
Realistic Transport Options
Public transport
It exists, but it's limited. Intercity buses cover main routes like Sumbawa Besar–Dompu–Bima, but schedules aren't frequent and they don't reach tourist points such as island-crossing piers or hiking basecamps.
For a holiday trip, relying on public transport means being prepared for uncertain waiting times and inconvenient vehicle connections.
Private vehicle
For most travel plans, this is the most sensible choice — not just for comfort, but for whether your itinerary is even feasible in the first place.
A private vehicle also gives you the flexibility to stop at interesting spots along the way — and in Sumbawa, the roads between towns often pass scenery that would be a shame to just drive past.
Getting into Sumbawa: Two Main Routes
By air — Sultan Muhammad Kaharuddin III Airport (SWQ)
The fastest way in. This airport is in Sumbawa Besar and is connected by several flights from Lombok, Bali, and Surabaya. If your time is limited, this is the most efficient option.
By sea — Kayangan to Poto Tano ferry
For those already in Lombok, or who want to combine a two-island trip. The crossing from Kayangan Harbour in East Lombok to Poto Tano Harbour in West Sumbawa takes about two hours.
This route makes sense if you're planning to stop at Kenawa Island or explore western Sumbawa first. But if your main goal is the whale sharks in Saleh Bay, remember there's still around a five-hour drive from Poto Tano.
Planning Your Airport Transfer
If you're arriving by flight, share your flight number and arrival time when booking transport — not just an estimated time. Flights to regional airports fairly often have their schedules adjusted, and knowing the flight number lets your driver track it without you needing to call repeatedly.
Also share an accurate passenger and luggage count. This determines which vehicle gets arranged — and an unexpected pile of extra luggage at the pickup point isn't a pleasant surprise for anyone.
Vehicle Types by Passenger Count
Keep in mind the capacities above assume standard luggage. If you're bringing large suitcases, a surfboard, or hiking gear, it's worth stepping up one vehicle size.
- 1–4 people. Avanza or Ertiga
- 5–6 people. Innova
- 7 people and above. Hiace or a larger vehicle
Small Things That Often Get Missed
- Need a child seat? Mention it upfront, not on the day of departure.
- Travelling with someone who has mobility limitations? Let us know so the vehicle and route can be adjusted.
- Planning to stop at several points along the way? Mention it when booking so the rental duration is calculated correctly.
- Cross-regency trips such as to Dompu or Bima need separate arrangements — confirm early.
