West Sumbawa
Mantar Village & Mantar Hill
A hilltop village with sunrise views above a sea of clouds.

Mantar Village sits in the hills of West Sumbawa, one of the highest villages on the island. Perched above the Alas Strait, it's known for a sea-of-clouds phenomenon that appears near sunrise — clouds fill the valley below while the village and Mantar Hill stay clear above it. Mantar residents welcome guests to stay overnight in their own simple wooden houses, offering a cultural experience rarely found on typical beach tour packages.
Programme Highlights
- A sea of clouds near sunrise from Mantar Hill
- Overnight stay in a simple local wooden house
- Views of the Alas Strait and surrounding small islands
- The highest village in the West Sumbawa area
Travel Information
Mantar Village is reached by vehicle from Poto Tano Harbour via Tapir Village, continuing up to the village by open-back pickup truck due to the steep terrain. We visit it on the Sumbawa Tour Package 4 Days 3 Nights (A), staying one night in a local home before heading up to Mantar Hill before dawn to see the sea of clouds.
