Moyo Island: A Complete Guide, How to Get There, and Practical Tips
18 August 2026 · 7 min read
A conservation island with a green-tinted waterfall that has once drawn the attention of famous guests from around the world — and how you can get there.

An Island Deliberately Left Quiet
Most of Moyo Island falls under conservation status. The consequence is clear: development is very limited, the forest remains dense, and visitor numbers never swell the way they do at other island destinations in Indonesia.
For some, that's a drawback. For others, it's exactly the reason to come. Moyo Island offers something increasingly rare: an island that hasn't turned into a row of food stalls and paid photo spots.
Mata Jitu Waterfall
This is the main draw. Mata Jitu isn't a tall waterfall plunging off a steep cliff — it's a series of tiered natural pools with a distinctive green-tinted water, a colour that comes from dissolved limestone minerals.
The pools are shallow and calm enough for most people to enjoy, including those who aren't confident swimmers. Getting there involves a footpath from the drop-off point — not a heavy trek, but flip-flops are best swapped for footwear with a bit more grip.
Snorkelling at Poto Jarum Beach
The waters around Moyo are clear enough for snorkelling. Poto Jarum Beach is usually the first stop, since it sits close to the boat's arrival route and the water there is relatively calm.
How to Get to Moyo Island
From Sumbawa Besar
This is the most common route. From Sumbawa Besar City or Sultan Muhammad Kaharuddin III Airport (code SWQ), it's an overland drive to the departure pier, followed by a fast boat crossing.
Since the crossing uses an open boat, timing can shift depending on sea conditions. Departing in the morning is generally more comfortable, before the wind picks up.
Combined with other destinations
Moyo Island is often paired with the Saleh Bay whale shark trip in a two- or three-day package. The usually more comfortable order is Moyo first, whale sharks the next day — so you're not forced into an early-morning wake-up on your very first day.
What to Prepare
Facilities on the island are limited. Bring enough drinking water and snacks from the mainland, since you won't find a convenience store out there.
- Swimwear and a change of clothes
- Comfortable footwear for the path to the waterfall
- Sunscreen
- A waterproof camera
- Enough cash — don't rely on digital payments
Who It Suits
Moyo Island is a good choice for families with children, couples, and anyone looking for a calm atmosphere. Unlike the whale shark trip, which demands a 2 a.m. wake-up, the Moyo programme departs at a far more humane hour.
If you're visiting Sumbawa with young children or elderly parents, this is usually the first destination we'd recommend.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much time do you need for a Moyo Island trip?
A one-day programme is enough to cover Poto Jarum Beach and Mata Jitu Waterfall. For a more relaxed pace or an overnight stay on the island, longer programmes are also available.
Is it suitable for children?
Yes. The pools at Mata Jitu are relatively shallow and calm, and the departure time isn't nearly as early as the whale shark trip.
Do you need to know how to swim?
Not necessarily. The waterfall pools can be enjoyed without swimming, and life vests are available for snorkelling.
