Planning a Sumbawa Holiday: How Many Days Do You Actually Need?

A guide to setting a realistic trip length, and destination combinations that actually make sense for the time you have.

Planning a Sumbawa Holiday: How Many Days Do You Actually Need?

Start With the Right Question

The question we get most often isn't which destinations are good — it's how many days you need. And the answer depends heavily on one thing: where you're coming from.

Sumbawa isn't a destination you can visit on a spontaneous weekend trip from Jakarta. Getting here already takes time, and the distances between destinations on the island itself aren't short either.

If You Have 1 Day

This is only realistic if you're already in Sumbawa — say, on a business trip in Sumbawa Besar with one free day.

Sensible options: a whale shark trip from Sumbawa Besar (early departure, back by midday), or a Moyo Island trip. Don't try to combine both in one day — it's simply not logistically possible.

If You Have 3 Days

This is the minimum length we'd recommend for a dedicated trip to Sumbawa. With three days, you can combine two major destinations without rushing.

The most common combination: Moyo Island on day one, Saleh Bay whale sharks on day two, and day three for departure. This order is chosen because the whale shark trip demands a 3 a.m. wake-up — more comfortable once you've already had a night's rest in Sumbawa.

If you're coming from Lombok, three days is also enough for a Kenawa Island and whale shark combination, with the ferry crossing on the first and last day.

If You Have 4 Days or More

This is where the trip starts to feel comfortable, rather than just ticking off a checklist. With one extra day, you don't need to squeeze two destinations into one day, and there's room for an extra stop.

Four days allows for a Kenawa, Paserang, Moyo, and whale shark combination at a much more relaxed pace. You'll still have room to slot in Mantar Village or Bedil Island without making your days feel packed.

When to Visit

April through November is the best period for almost every activity in Sumbawa. The sea is calmer, island crossings are more comfortable, and your odds of a whale shark encounter are higher since the bagan fishermen operate consistently.

January through March is peak rainy season. Travel is still possible, but island crossings can be cancelled at short notice due to waves, and sea-based activities become less comfortable. If your schedule is flexible, avoid this period.

Private Trip or Open Trip?

An open trip is more affordable since the cost is shared with other guests, but the date follows a fixed schedule and you'll be travelling alongside people you don't already know.

A private trip is more flexible — you set the date yourself, the itinerary can be customised, and you don't need to wait for other guests. For a family trip or a group of more than four people, a private trip often actually works out more sensible on a per-person cost basis.

Before You Decide

If you're still unsure about the duration or destination combination, just tell us your situation: how many days you have, where you're starting from, who's joining, and what you most want to see. We can help put together a realistic plan — including telling you honestly if your plan is too packed for the time available.
