A 5-Day Sumbawa Itinerary for First-Timers
22 September 2026 · 7 min read
Never been to Sumbawa and not sure where to start? Here's a 5-day flow covering the most iconic spots without feeling rushed.

Why 5 Days?
Sumbawa is bigger than most people expect, and its main draws are spread from the eastern side (Saleh Bay) all the way to the west (Kenawa, near Poto Tano). Five days gives you room for the whale sharks, Moyo Island, and one west-coast stop without racing the clock every single day.
Day 1: Arrive in Sumbawa Besar
Flights from Bali or Lombok usually land at Sumbawa Besar Airport (SWQ) around midday or afternoon. Rest at your hotel, and if you've got time and energy left, swing by Dalam Loka Palace — a wooden stilt building from the former Sumbawa Sultanate, just 10-15 minutes from the city centre.
Day 2: Whale Shark Trip in Saleh Bay
Early pickup (around 2 a.m.) from your hotel in Sumbawa Besar, roughly a 3-hour drive to Labuan Jambu, then a boat ride out to the bagan area. You'll be back in Sumbawa Besar by the afternoon, so tonight is for a proper rest.
Day 3: Moyo Island & Mata Jitu Waterfall
A more relaxed pace than the day before — a morning (not pre-dawn) departure for Moyo Island, snorkelling at a few spots, then a dip in the green-tinged, crystal-clear Mata Jitu Waterfall. Back in Sumbawa Besar by the afternoon.
Day 4: Kenawa & Paserang Islands
A drive west toward Poto Tano, then a crossing to Paserang and Kenawa Islands — two small, uninhabited islands with green savanna hills and glass-clear water. This also sets you up nicely if your onward journey heads to Lombok, since Poto Tano is the ferry crossing point.
Day 5: Transfer Out
Depending on your onward plans, this could mean a transfer to Sumbawa Besar Airport for your next flight, or — since you were already at Kenawa the day before — continuing the crossing to Lombok via Poto Tano.
Ways to Adjust This
This itinerary can be tightened into 3 days (combining just the whale sharks and Moyo) or stretched to 7 days by adding Mantar Village, Gili Bedil, or some extra downtime on one of the islands. We regularly adjust the order and length based on each guest's flight schedule and interests.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 5 days enough to explore Sumbawa?
Yes, enough to enjoy the main highlights (whale sharks, Moyo, Kenawa) without rushing. For deeper exploration, including Mantar Village or Gili Bedil, 7 days would be more comfortable.
Can this itinerary be adjusted around my flight schedule?
Yes. We regularly adjust the day order and pickup/drop-off points based on your arrival and departure times.
